Evok was selected to redevelop VisitElizabethCity.com, transforming an outdated, content-heavy tourism website into a modern, visitor-focused destination platform. Built originally in 2017, the existing site suffered from poor navigation, excessive content, and limited flexibility for staff updates — challenges common among mid-sized coastal destinations competing against larger, better-funded markets.

Our role was to reposition Elizabeth City as a true destination, simplify the planning experience, and deliver a scalable, accessible website that could support long-term tourism growth, partner participation, and evolving marketing goals. This engagement closely parallels the objectives of Palm Coast and the Flagler Beaches: creating a clean, high-performing destination website that balances inspiration, usability, and operational practicality.

Destination Strategy & Planning Approach
Our work began with a comprehensive discovery and kickoff process to align the website with Elizabeth City’s evolving identity as the “Harbor of Hospitality.” The client emphasized the need to move away from regional catch-all content and focus squarely on Elizabeth City itself — positioning it as a welcoming, walkable waterfront destination rather than an extension of nearby markets.

Key strategic priorities included:

  • Reducing content clutter and eliminating outdated or irrelevant pages
  • Simplifying navigation so visitors could plan a trip quickly and confidently
  • Supporting booking intent, itinerary building, and newsletter engagement
  • Designing a site that feels friendly, modern, and approachable without being busy or overwhelming

We translated these insights into a direct, purpose-built sitemap and content hierarchy focused on places to stay, things to do, events, dining, and outdoor experiences, ensuring the site supported real visitor decision-making.

UX Design & Content Architecture
The Visit Elizabeth City website was designed using a mobile-first, user-centered approach, reflecting how most visitors discover and plan travel today. To ensure clarity and flexibility, we developed a modular page system supported by multiple template layouts, allowing content to be structured intentionally without sacrificing consistency.
Key UX and design features included:

  • Custom WordPress architecture using Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) and flexible content blocks
  • A clean, single-column homepage experience that prioritizes storytelling and discovery
  • Multiple interior page templates (20/80, 80/20, 10/80/10 splits) to support varied content needs
  • megamenu navigation system that keeps primary pathways clear while avoiding information overload
  • Event calendar integration with both calendar and list views for easy browsing

The result is a site that feels streamlined and intuitive, encouraging exploration without overwhelming users — a critical consideration for destinations with diverse offerings and limited attention spans.

INTEGRATION.

Engagement, Events & Community Integration
Community participation and content freshness were central to the platform strategy. Evok implemented tools that allow the destination team to keep the site current while maintaining editorial control.
Key engagement features included:

  • Events calendar integration with flexible display options
  • Gravity Forms for visitor inquiries and submissions, integrated with Mailchimp for email marketing
  • Social content integration using Smash Balloon and CrowdRiff to surface authentic, user-generated content
  • Retention of important real-time tools such as the Harbor Cam, supporting both visitors and local boating activity

These features ensure the site remains active, relevant, and community-connected — supporting repeat visitation and ongoing engagement.
